InnerAsia's rugs are woven from Changphel or Northern Highland sheep wool. These pure-breed species dwell under extreme harsh climate of the Tibet highlands at elevations above 14,000 feet. There is little wonder the sheep's wool fiber grows very thick and very long. The physical quality of Changphel wool rug piles are evident in the springy feel when walking on, yet durable to be enjoyed for a lifetime and then pass on to posterity as family heirloom. Aesthetically, Changphel wool fiber has a thicker surface area which is more light reflective and shows off the color brilliantly.

In 1986, Kesang Tashi, a Dartmouth-educated, Tibetanborn international banker, found his country's centuries old rug weaving tradition endangered. He took on the challenge to revitalize the cottage industry by initiating Tibet's own arts and crafts movement, thereby restoring the pride of this ancient heritage and insuring its continuity. The result of this effort is Gangchen Carpets of Tibet. It also fulfills Tashi's objective of generating livelihood for Tibet's wool producing nomads, wool carders, yarn spinners, rug weavers and many associated artisans in his native homeland.
